About
The SET Plan Action on batteries is implemented by Batteries Europe, which is the European Technology Innovation Platform of the European Battery Alliance that was launched in 2017 by the European Commission. This paved the way for the BATT4EU co-programmed partnership under Horizon Europe.
Batteries Europe has its roots in the work done within SET Plan Action 7: Competitive in global sector and e-mobility. Most of the experts from the working group on batteries are now strongly involved in Batteries Europe, which has also attracted many new industrial, research and national representatives.
In addition, the work on batteries is supported by the coordination and support action BATTERY 2030+, which is focused on long-term, ICT-driven battery research. Batteries Europe and BATTERY2030+ are linked through the emerging technologies strand of Batteries Europe.
The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) of 2024 builds heavily on the roadmaps that have been published by Batteries Europe and Battery 2030. It is the result of the combined inputs of hundreds of European battery experts.
Targets and objectives
The SRIA of 2024 replaces the SRIA of the BATT4EU SRIA of 2021 and the Batteries Europe SRA of 2020. It points to six imperatives necessary to help improve the competitiveness of the European battery sector:
- ensure that research and innovation matches industry needs to translate into gigafactories and markets
- increase the strategic autonomy of Europe by reducing the reliance on foreign critical raw materials
- improve battery affordability to accelerate the green transition and keep the European industry competitive
- improve the flexibility of battery manufacturing and recycling systems
- implement a safe and sustainable by-design framework for batteries
- support the continuity of excellent European battery research and academic-industrial research.
The SRIA also contains a multi-annual agenda, implementation plan and timeframe for each research and innovation activity identified, which is an assessment on which research projects will benefit from funding under the BATT4EU umbrella.
Composition of the IWG
Six permanent working groups are established, which operate for the whole duration of the Batteries Europe and BATT4EU Partnership.
The National and Regional Coordinators Group (NRCG) is chaired by France and includes all SET Plan countries except Bulgaria, making it the working group with the highest country representation.
