Clean Energy Technology Observatory

Overview

To tackle the complexity of the transition to a climate-neutral EU, the European Commission has launched the Clean Energy Technology Observatory (CETO). This initiative is a collaboration between the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, which implements the observatory, and the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation and the Directorate-General for Energy, which provides policy support.

CETO monitors EU research and innovation activities in clean energy technologies, building on the work of the Low-Carbon Energy Observatory. Its main goal is to offer a comprehensive repository of techno-economic and socio-economic data on key technologies and their integration into the energy system. CETO focuses on the status and future prospects of innovative solutions, as well as the sustainable market adoption of both mature and emerging technologies.

The evidence-based analysis produced by CETO supports the Annual Progress Report on the Competitiveness of Clean Energy Technologies (CPR), part of the State of the Energy Union Report, and informs the implementation of the SET Plan and research policy development.

CETO publishes a series of annual reports on various themes, including:

  • technology maturity
  • development trends
  • value chain analysis
  • global market positioning
  • clean technology system integration.
