Global investment in low-carbon energy surged to a record €177 billion in 2010

According to Bloomberg news agency, investment in low-carbon energy surged to a record $243 billion (€177 billion) last year, boosted by a 30 per cent spending increase in China to $51.1 billion (€37.3 billion) and “a burst in small-scale solar-power installations”.

This figure compares to investment of $186.5 billion (€136.1billion) in 2009 and is more than double the level in 2005, accordingto a study by Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Asset financing for utility-scale projects such as wind farms, solarparks and biofuel plants expanded 19 percent last year to $127.8billion (€93.3 billion), more than half of expenditure, according toNew Energy Finance.

The figures cover technologies including wind and solar power, energyefficiency, Smart electricity grid equipment, biofuels and carboncapture and storage.
