On 23-24 November the Strategic Energy Technology Plan 2020 conference took place virtually with the theme “Making the SET Plan fit for the EU Green Recovery”. Co-organised with the German Presidency of the Council of the EU, the event discussed the contribution of the SET Plan to the more ambitious energy and climate targets for 2030 and 2050 in the context of the recovery.
The conference started with a ministerial session, including the participation of Minister Altmaier and Cssr. Simson. The high-level panel discussed the clean energy transition path in the context of the European recovery as well as the importance of research and innovation to boost competitiveness and keep Europe at the forefront of clean energy technologies. Government representatives provided insights about the R&I aspects of the Recovery and Resilience Facility plans under development as well as the link to the National Energy and Climate Plans and the European Green Deal objectives.
Since 2008, the SET Plan has been the core instrument to help aligning European and national clean energy R&I priorities across Europe by fostering cooperation between governments, the research community and industry. This cooperation mechanism helps to leverage the use of funding instruments and to attract private investments in key clean energy technologies needed to reach the European Green Deal objectives, including renewables, batteries and smart grids. Speakers discussed these aspects, looking in particular at the priorities linked to energy system integration, hydrogen, off-shore renewables and the Renovation Wave.
Input Papers developed by the SET Plan Implementation Working Groups (IWGs)
All SET Plan Implementation Working Groups (IWG) have been asked to contribute on a voluntary basis to any of these policy papers, answering the following question:
“How is your work within the IWG contributing to the development and implementation of the three strategies, taking into consideration the #NextGenerationEU package?”
In addition IWG 8 Renewable fuels and bioenergy prepared a Position Paper for the SET-Plan Conference 2020, Bioenergy for a green economy, to generall raise the awareness of Bioenergy and Biofuels.
