European CO2 storage database

Introduction to CO2StoP

The characterisation of potential CO2 storage sites is a prerequisite for the large scale deployment of CCS in Europe. In support of development of a European CO2 Storage Atlas the European Commission funded the CO2StoP project (CO2 Storage Potential in Europe - Project No. ENER/C1/154-2011-SI2.611598), which made a first assessment of the European CO2 storage capacity, both onshore and offshore. An introduction to the project can be found here:

About CO2Stop

More information about the project as a well as the final report can be found at:

https://ec.europa.eu/energy/en/studies/assessment-co2-storage-potential-europe-co2stop

The CO2StoP project also created a dataset of geological parameters that enables the assessment of potential geological CO2 storage capacity in the EU Member States.

The database and the visualization tool produced by the Project can be downloaded here. Access requires the use of the commercial software: Microsoft Access, Microsoft Word and ESRI ArcGIS. More information on the installation and the functions of the tool can be found in the user guide that can be found in the package.

The JRC, the “Knowledge for the Energy Union” unit, recognizing the need for wider and open accessibility, has transformed the datasets of this database to open formats to make them accessible through non-commercial software. Spatial datasets are provided in KML format and table datasets are made available as CSV files. The individual data files are made available here 'as is' and can be downloaded below.
