Electricity grids

Although there is no standard global definition, a smart electricity grid is generally defined as an electricity network allowing devices to communicate between suppliers to consumers, allowing them to manage demand, protect the distribution network, save energy and reduce costs. They can intelligently integrate the behaviour and actions of all users connected to it - generators, consumers and those that do both – in order to efficiently deliver sustainable, economic and secure electricity supplies. Smart meters – which provide utilities with a secure, two-way flow of data - may be part of a smart grid, but alone do not constitute a smart grid.

The current European electricity grid was built more than half a century ago. Since building or upgrading conventional overhead lines to increase the transmission capacity is progressively more difficult, alternative technologies are either being deployed or are under development:

Europe on track to meet ambitious renewables targets The European Commission released a report revealing that the EU is on track to exceed its target of generating 20% of all energy consumed from renewables, as set out in the Renewable Energy Directive. Ten of the EU’s 27 Member States are likely to surpass their national targets, while a further 12 will meet their goals. Just five countries are predicted to miss their targets using domestic renewable energy sources alone.
