Capacities Map

2008A pre-requisite for intelligent policy making on energy technologies is a consistent and reliable data base on the current status of European R&D capacities. SETIS, through its Capacities Mapping exercise, assesses the current energy research investments on low-carbon technologies along with the institutional capacities, policies and programmes in Europe.

In 2007, SETIS published the first Capacities Map in the context of the preparation of SET-Plan. This analysis focused on the status quo of the public national systems of energy-related R&D in the EU, and provided comprehensive details on the R&D budgets and priorities, the institutional set-up and the corporate energy R&D expenditures. In 2009, this analysis has been complemented by the estimation of the current corporate and public research investment in low-carbon technologies currently proposed for the European Industrial Initiatives under the SET-Plan. The result of this analysis has been a key input to the upcoming Communication on Financing Low-Carbon Technologies. More details are available in the analyses section. This second Capacities Map has been published in October 2009.
