Overview

SETIS provides support to EU policy-making and decision-making by developing science-based responses to policy challenges with a socioeconomic and a scientific/technological dimension. SETIS has four primary activities: Technology Mapping, Capacities Mapping, Technology Roadmaps and monitoring and review of the SET-Plan implementation.

Technology Mapping

The SET-Plan Technology Map helps to identify the SET-Plan technology priorities, i.e. those technologies with the greatest potential to contribute to the transition to a low-carbon economy. It is the SET-Plan reference on the state of knowledge for low-carbon technology in Europe.

The 2009 updated Technology Map, prepared by SETIS, responds to the need for information on low carbon technologies. This is essential for implementation of the SET-Plan.

The 'Technology Descriptions' assess the technological state of the art and anticipated developments of 17 low carbon technologies, including the status of the corresponding industries and their potential, the barriers to large scale deployment, the needs of the industrial sector to realise the technology goals and the synergies with other sectors.

Capacities Mapping

The Capacities Map is an estimation of research and development (R&D) investment in the priority technologies of the SET-Plan. It is a benchmark of the current R&D spending on those technologies and is a basis for the comparison with their future research investment needs.

The technologies covered in the Capacities Mapping include those technologies proposed by the SET-Plan to be launched as European Industrial Initiatives:

  • Wind energy, Photovoltaics (PV), Concentrating solar power (CSP), Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), Bio-energy, Fuel cells and hydrogen, Electricity grids, Nuclear fission (with a focus on generation IV reactors) and Nuclear fusion

Technology Roadmap

The Technology Roadmaps are a basis for strategic planning and decision-making. They help define the proposed European Industrial Initiatives and are heavily based on industry proposals, multilateral meetings and expert consultations between the European Commission and the European Technology Platforms, the relevant sector associations, the research community, Member States and other stakeholders.

The Roadmaps provide a master plan of the efforts needed over the next 10 years in the EU based on the best available information but are not detailed implementation plans. The detailed planning is jointly elaborated and agreed by Member States, industry and the Commission.
